Samhwa Paints announced on Monday, June 12, 2023, that it has obtained and registered a patent for its new formula for eco-friendly bio-based aqueous paints.
As climate change is emerging as the most critical social issue worldwide, consumers are growing all the more aware of the environmental impacts of companies and their products. Companies in Korea and abroad are thus increasing their research and development of eco-friendly products.
Samhwa, for its part, has invented a new formula for architectural paints made of natural ingredients derived from botanical sources like corn, casava, and sugar beet that can replace oil-based monomers that are commonly used to make typical paints.
Bio-based paints introduced to this date have been regarded as less durable or adhesive than paints made of petrochemicals. Samhwa’s new formula, however, satisfies the Class-2 criteria of the two types of KS M 6010 certificates for water-based paints.
The formula will be applied to Jayeongachi Water-Based Interior Eggshell and Jayeongachi Water-Based Interior Matte paints. Both series offer antimicrobial and antifungal colors that, when applied to surfaces, are easy to clean and help keep the indoor air fresh. Paints from both series absorb formaldehyde particles floating in the air known to be a Class-1 carcinogenic substance.
Both series have obtained the UL Environmental Claim Validation (ECV) certificate, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Certified Biobased Product label, the Environmental Mark, and the HB Mark, all of which attest to the eco-friendliness and safety of the paints according to official standards.
A Samhwa spokesperson revealed: “Samhwa Paints is investing aggressively in the development of new eco-friendly technologies because it is an environmentally conscious company that puts sustainability of the future environment and society first.”
Samhwa’s efforts to develop eco-friendly technologies have been augmented under the company’s ESG management system. The company continues to introduce new sustainable products for interior and exterior applications on buildings, waterproofing and flooring, and pre-coated metals.
